There are many reasons as to why I ride. Here’s just a few that are important to me.
Adventure – From a young age, I have always been the adventurous type. From kayaking down rivers and climbing up cliffs to multi-day walking expeditions in Morocco with extreme weather conditions. Riding bikes for me is a new way to explore, it can be done in any weather and carried out almost no matter what. It’s a sport that can be enjoyed the moment you step out of your house. It makes me feel free and feeling total freedom is the best feeling you could ask for.
Social – The social aspect of riding is huge, really bringing people together and for me bringing people closer is so important. You can meet people through racing, events, arranged group rides, bike shows or just when you’re out on your local loop. The best thing I’ve learned is there are so many people out there willing to help and sometimes the only thing they have in common is they both ride bikes. It’s amazing!
Mental Health – This is one I am very passionate about. For years I have really suffered with my mental health and I have tried no end of methods to heal myself all to no real success. Mountain biking for sure has been the greatest help for me. It keeps me active, which in turn helps me feel better about the way I look. But also the feeling of getting lost in the beauty of nature grounds me. It reminds me that all my worries in life are not important and that I can be happy, that I deserve to be happy. Mountain biking gently reminds me of these things every time I ride.
Learning to Love myself was the first step to getting better… Mountain biking did that for me.
THE YEAR AHEAD?
My plan for the next 12 months is fairly simple and I believe it is one that we always need reminding of. Just keep having fun on my bike and remember why I started riding bikes in the first place. Because it brings me so much happiness. My goals are slightly different, I would love to bring new people into mountain biking and show them how it helped me. Maybe it could help them too. A problem shared is a problem halved right? Getting people outside more and having a great time can never be a bad thing. I want to show people that no matter your size, fitness, disability or issues you can ride a bike and have fun. We all deserve to be happy and mountain biking makes me happy.
